Embryo transfer is an increasingly popular equine breeding technique that allows a mare to produce a foal without having to carry the pregnancy herself. The procedure involves recovering an embryo from a donor mare and transferring it into a recipient mare, which then carries the pregnancy and gives birth to the foal.
For performance and competition mares, embryo transfer can provide an opportunity to continue their sporting careers while also producing offspring. It can also be particularly beneficial for mares that are unable to maintain a pregnancy themselves. In some circumstances, embryo transfer may allow a mare to produce more than one foal during a breeding season.
At Hambleton Equine Clinic, our experienced reproduction team provides specialist veterinary support throughout the embryo transfer process, helping breeders plan and manage each stage with the aim of maximising the chances of a successful outcome.
How Does Equine Embryo Transfer Work?
The embryo transfer process begins with pre-breeding screening of the donor mare. Our vets assess the ovaries and reproductive tract and screen for contagious diseases that could affect fertility. The donor and recipient mares are then monitored to ensure their reproductive cycles are appropriately synchronised.
Once the donor mare is ready, she is inseminated using fresh, chilled or frozen semen. Approximately six to eight days after ovulation, the uterus is gently flushed using sterile solution to recover the embryo. Hambleton Equine Clinic reports embryo recovery rates of up to 70%, depending on factors including the fertility of the individual mare and stallion.
If an embryo is successfully recovered, it is carefully transferred into a suitably prepared recipient mare. The recipient is then monitored using ultrasound, with an initial scan around seven days after transfer to confirm whether the procedure has been successful. Further scans can be performed to monitor the developing pregnancy.
Why Choose Embryo Transfer for Your Mare?
One of the main advantages of embryo transfer is the flexibility it can provide breeders. A valuable competition mare does not necessarily need to take time away from her career to carry a pregnancy, as a recipient mare can carry the embryo instead. This can help breeders make greater use of a mare’s genetics while continuing her sporting or competitive commitments.
Embryo transfer may also be considered where a mare has difficulty maintaining a pregnancy. By transferring an embryo to a suitable recipient, breeders may have another option for producing a healthy foal from a mare that would otherwise struggle to carry one herself.
Successful embryo transfer requires careful coordination between the donor and recipient mares, accurate reproductive monitoring and appropriate veterinary management. Hambleton Equine Clinic provides reproductive services for a variety of breeds and works with breeders and stud farms throughout the region, offering practical advice and support throughout the process.
